100 Years 1918 - 2018 Poppy day-1 copy

Inspired by the poppy display at the Tower of London remembering the first day of Britain’s involvement with World War One, the Rotary Club of Rugby Dunsmore sought to incept a project which would commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day in 2018.

The aim was to celebrate Rugby’s artistic talent by commissioning a local artist whose work not only inspires, but could capture the spirit of celebration which marked this particular day; and which remembers the enormous number of people who had given their lives so that we all could inhabit a world where we have the opportunities to fulfill our potential and live freely in a democracy.

So the Rotary club teamed up with Janet Watson Art from Rugby and Mark Brazier the owner and CEO of PAB Group to commission and sponsor a work plan to hang at the Rugby Art Gallery and Museum (RAGM) during Nov 2018.

The result is a triptych (a work of art in three panels) depicting a positive landscape of poppies created for future generations. “The bright individual particles drawn towards the sun represent the millions of people who made huge sacrifices to help make this possible during all conflicts since 1914”.

“The aim was to create a stimulating picture to grace any living room, office or board room for ever, not just for the 100th anniversary commemoration, and I think that Janet Watson Art achieved that admirably. Not only can you purchase a unique piece of local art history (limited edition signed prints or unique canvas prints hand embellished by the artist) and enjoy it every day, but the is the potential for it to increase in value substantially over time. Plus there will be a generous donation to the Mayors charity at the same time." said Mike Folly, chairman of fundraising for Rugby Dunsmore Rotary Club.

The art is to he launched publicly by Mayor Cllr. Tom Mahoney at RAGM on 6th November at 12 noon and everyone is invited to come along, give their views and spend a little time with others contemplating the whole concept of this year‘s Armistice commemoration.

Contact: Mike Folly on 07866 673391 or 01788 817171 or [email protected] for more information.

Come along and see this amazing commemoration of 100 years since Armistice day 1918. You can buy this picture as a limited addition signed print at the Rugby Visitor Centre and the Mayor’s Charity SSAFA will benefit. All welcome at noon next Tuesday 6th Nov 12 Noon at the Rugby Art Gallery And Museum foyer. Great opportunity to see something special!
